Rooftop by rooftop, Kashi goes solar: Varanasi ranks among India's top 10

Rooftop by rooftop, Kashi goes solar: Varanasi ranks among India's top 10

Varanasi is quietly building a cleaner, more self-reliant energy future — one rooftop at a time. The city has risen into the top 10 districts in the country for rooftop solar installations, a milestone powered largely by the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the national scheme that helps households put solar panels on their own roofs. The figures behind the ranking are encouraging. Recent data credits the city with roughly 39,000 rooftop solar systems, together generating well over six lakh units of electricity every day. That adds up to substantial savings — estimated at around ₹144 crore a year across households — and a meaningful cut in carbon emissions, on the order of more than 1.5 lakh tonnes annually. Within Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi sits near the very top of the table, second only to Lucknow. Beyond the numbers, the shift shows up in everyday life: lower electricity bills, more dependable daytime power, and a real sense of families taking part in Kashi's move toward clean energy. It is a reminder that alongside the ghats, temples and headline projects, some of the city's most hopeful progress is happening on ordinary rooftops — and that residents curious about going solar now have a well-marked path to follow.

Kashi to the Golden Temple in comfort: a new sleeper Vande Bharat set for Varanasi–Amritsar

Travel between Kashi and Punjab is about to get a comfortable new option. A new sleeper-class Vande Bharat Express — named the Sant Ravidas Express — is scheduled to be flagged off on 17 July 2026, connecting Varanasi with Amritsar (Chheharta) in Punjab. Reports describe it as the country's second sleeper Vande Bharat, bringing modern, faster overnight travel to this busy inter-state route. The service is planned to run three days a week in each direction, with stops that include Lucknow along the way. For families spread across Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, for pilgrims travelling between two of North India's great spiritual centres — Kashi and the Golden Temple city of Amritsar — and for business travellers, an overnight sleeper offers a smoother, more restful journey than many existing choices. For Varanasi in particular, better long-distance rail links keep adding to the city's growing connectivity, alongside its expanding flights and road projects. If a trip towards Punjab is on your horizon, it is worth watching for the schedule and booking windows once the service opens. As always, confirm the exact timings and running days on official railway channels before you plan, since introductory schedules are sometimes fine-tuned in the early weeks.

New Varanasi link corridor gets the green light — smoother, faster city journeys ahead

New Varanasi link corridor gets the green light — smoother, faster city journeys ahead

Getting across Varanasi is set to become noticeably easier. On 15 July 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs cleared a new link corridor of about 43 km that will connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road, running along the River Varuna. It is a substantial project — a mostly elevated, four-to-six-lane route with flyovers, ramps, loops and service roads — to be built by the National Highways Authority of India under the Hybrid Annuity Model at an estimated cost of around ₹10,998 crore. For anyone who has waited in city traffic, the headline benefit is time. According to the announcement, the drive between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station is expected to fall from roughly 40 minutes to about 20 — nearly half. Smoother links to the airport, railway stations and the surrounding region are also promised, along with easier movement of goods and better road safety. A project of this scale takes years to build, so the change will arrive gradually rather than overnight. But for a city that welcomes millions of pilgrims and visitors each year, a dedicated corridor that eases pressure on crowded roads is genuinely good news — and another sign of the steady infrastructure push shaping Kashi's next chapter.

She'll make you feel these 8 emotions (भावनाएं) | Varanasi Varanasi, the world’s oldest inhabited city felt less like a place and more like an experience that stayed with me long after I left. And witnessing Dev Deepawali here took that feeling to another level. The ghats lit up with countless diyas, the sky bursting with fireworks, the sound of the aarti echoing across the Ganga… it was surreal, overwhelming and unlike anything I had ever felt before.
